I did that for this case and created a database I called timeTest.fp7 which I made available at my company's FileMaker development site. One thing I do when I want to test out a solution is to create a quick database file just to test my premise. He posted a custom function called TimeMask. Sure enough, I found just what I was looking for from Steve Gerow of Abrazos Data Consulting. However, before I started, I thought I would take a quick look at Brian Dunning's custom functions area on his web site. I thought I would write a custom function to allow them to enter the data as they wished, and have the custom function change it to a time format. I decided to approach this problem by fixing the “front end” of the issue, instead of the “back end” - meaning I wanted the data going in to be correct which would allow me to have a simple calculation on the back end. They determined that they just wanted to fix this one issue and not add any features.Īs with most problems in life, there are many solutions available. We also built in a feature that would check to see if they had any jobs open when logging out of the system, and then take them to that job so they could stop the time. When they were finished working for the day, they would hit a “Stop” button to stop the clock. I tried to sell them on a feature that we had previously developed which would allow a user to log into the system, locate the job on which they wanted to work and hit a “Start” button to start the clock ticking. Of course they had huge problems with this and tried to write a complex calculation to figure out how many hours a job took.

They then would subtract the stop time from the start time to come up with total hours. The client wanted their users to enter their start and stop times like this: 10.15 9 4.45. Their issue was with a Time Sheet FileMaker solution that was developed in house. I had a client come to me with an issue they needed help solving.

So with time on my mind, the first post will be about time.
